Full definition

Certificate of insurance (COI) is defined as: A certificate of insurance (COI) is a one-page summary issued by an insurer that confirms the policy holder, cover type, limits, effective dates and any endorsements - the standard evidence supplied to prove a supplier is insured.

A COI is not the full policy. It is a short attestation from the insurer that a named business currently holds specific cover, with specific limits, for a specific period. Clients use it to confirm that a supplier's insurance meets their contractual minimums.

The three things to check on any COI are the insured party name (must match the trading entity you contracted with), the effective and expiry dates (must cover the whole engagement) and the limits per cover type (must meet or exceed contract requirements).
