Employers' liability insurance is a UK legal requirement for most businesses with employees, covering claims from staff who are injured or become ill because of their work.

The Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 requires most UK employers to hold at least £5m of cover, with £10m the market standard. Fines apply for trading without it.

Any supplier that has employees on your site should be able to produce a certificate showing the insured entity, limit of indemnity and effective dates. Sole traders working alone are usually exempt.
